Well, I'm fast enough now that I need to cage my truck. I've been debating and debating; priced the cage and researched everything and I just can't bring myself to put bars through the back glass...
SO...
I'm gonna do a S10 Blazer/Jimmy instead :21:
Plans are cert to 8.50 - minimal interior; manual everything; mini-tub for 325 radial; fuel cell; still keeping it real streetable...will see where it ends up...All the parts from the current truck will swap over...I got the wife over the idea (big hurdle) and I just got through looking at a SUPER straight 1988 GMC Jimmy that is clean as hell, runs and drives; interior is better than what I've got now...will probably go back tomorrow and pick her up...Wish me luck!!!

I told you it was clean :21:
The good: Supposedly an old man had it from new...it's got the 4.3L v6, 700r4 the body is EXTREMELY straight...It's the loaded model, tilt, cruise, pw,pl, AIR CONDITIONING...and it all still works!!! Underhood is 100% original, no tears in the seats or splits in the dash...It has nearly new matched rubber with the original steel wheels, trim rings, and center caps all intact (almost unheard of)
The bad: It needs window channel on both doors, the AC works but vents don't select (found vacuum leak this morning) drivers side door bushings/pins/latch - and, well, those running boards...other than that this thing is awesome!
Hell, I might restore it instead of gutting/cage/drag race LOL

Don't put a v8 in that. Because than you will be another reason why I shouldn't sell my 90 blazer and should just v8 her.
Does look pretty good for its age. Mine had the running boards on it and within 30 minutes of it being parked, I had them babies off.

I think right now Diabolocal I'm gonna keep it stock suspension with leafs.
Talked with the chassis guy yesterday during "work" - he can't get to it until November which is no biggie since money is tighter for me right now.
While I'm on that subject, do you guys think chromoly is worth the extra $500.00 over mild steel?
I got all my parts in yesterday to rebuild the doors/windows...I'll take a few pics just for the hell of it and post them up. :)
Diabolical
08-28-2009, 11:16 AM
Absolutely not..
Unless you are racing very competitively it is not worth the cost..
Mild steel is fine and very strong..
The weight savings is not that much..
Bring on the pics :)

Kevin (my brother) came over early Saturday and we began the carnage...Pulled both doors down and redid all the weatherstrip and new latchs, interior and exterior handles ect. ect.
Everything was going smoothly until we busted a door glass...LOL We already had it installed in the new tracks and was JUST tightening down the FINAL clamp bolt that hold the window onto the regulator arm...Oh well, a trip to pull a part and all was good :hat:
Cleaning up a LOT of odds and ends - I used to drive alot of junky stuff growong up and I really enjoy fixing all the little stuff that I can find...This thing is really roadworthy now!!!

Allright, been a while since I updated this thread...
I pulled the running boards off, and have been driving the snot out of this Jimmy (and man it runs great); but all the while dreaming of what I'm gonna get to do to it in the back of my head :D
I've always worked out of a two car garage in the past - but pulling two vehicles down at once in the amount of room I have is going to be a challenge and I can't find a shop that I can rent for what I'm willing to pay.
SO...
I'm going to send the whitey off to mom and dad's place and put her in the barn over the winter...pull the Jimmy down and do all that I care to in "my side" of the garage, and then bring the white truck home and swap everything over...
This thread is fixing to get some activity :)

All right guys, I've been lazy on updating this thing - this is going slower than I had planned due to the holidays/work/wife/horse/dog/cats/family ect. ect. ect. you know the drill :)
So I got the rear in and this thing is freaking LOW - the springs are 4" lowering springs for a truck so I'm thinking this is around 5" on the Jimmy. It looks sick as hell but I'm going to have to notch the frame to get any travel at all:thinking:
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/DSC01699.jpg
I think I'm going with these notches and just weld them in instead of roasting 15 chinese drill bits:
http://www.suicidedoors.com/notches/blazer-bolt-c-notch
This is going to be a turbo build, and I *hopefully* have the blower setup sold to a good friend. I have been looking for a cheap low-rise single plane intake, and picked up this CHERRY Edelbrock Torker II off of craigslist for FORTY DOLLARS. The demon looks good on it too
I think I'm gonna order the notches and install those, and while I'm at it pull the gas tank for dual Walbros

Yeah, I'm really torn on those wheels. I think they look bad ass, but drag radials in a 18" size are SO expensive, plus they ride like a lumber wagon.
I've been thinking about some Champion Beadlocks "Speed Series" as nobody around here has them...

It's hard to tell by the pics but the Blazer/Jimmy frame kicks out right where you have to cut for the notch - not as simple as it seems, but it went pretty easy with the templates they provided.
If anybody cares to know that is a 275/60 radial on a 8" rim with 4.5" BS on a stock width rear end.
I've got the fuel tank pulled out right now, and the next project is getting the fuel system sorted out - should have pics of that within a few weeks :)

Uneventful update:
Allright, we got moved into the new house with 5 acres. The Jimmy is settled in the new garage (which I may post some pics of relatively soon.)
My wife has a horse that is contained on land that we have been leasing forever. I am going "all-in" right now to get our new place fenced off and building a loafing shed so we can get this hay-chompin' glue stick over here with us.
The Jimmy remains on the back burner for now.
HOWEVER -
The wife is very appreciative of me sacrificing my fun to make her happy, and work has been VERY lucrative for me lately :) As soon as this fencing/other construction is done, my wife and I agree that the purse-strings will be released to my sole control on the Jimmy build :D
I bet it will be probably be August/September before I get back with it, but at least it's something to shoot for!!!
Cool James...

I couldn't bring myself to cut holes in mine either. It's a street truck, too. So I bought a 2000 Blazer. I was going to take everything out of my truck, too, but now I'm going to leave it alone and start from scratch on the Blazer. Unless I go cheap, I figure the Blazer should be done around 2045! lol

So sick, are you doing a wire tuck on this thing? Or, whats the plan with the fuse block modifications? (I may have missed something)
jameskirk1
10-12-2010, 02:59 PM
Basically just removed all pins/wires from the fuse block that I'm not going to use (which is quite a few)...My first truck was just kindof a "snip here an a snip there" and "tape it up out of the way" I never had the dash all the way out of that truck.
This time I intend to get it as clean and un-cluttered as possible, but still keep it streetable. If it's not going to be used, I'm takin it out!!!

Really debated on getting/installing a fuel cell - but the more I thought about it I really wanted to try and use the stock setup.
1. Its already mounted sturdily.
2. It has a fill neck external to the vehicle.
3. It's mounted dead centerline in the truck already.
4. It's mounted rear of the axle already, helps with traction.
5. Fuel level sender is already there using stock wiring.
The Racepump is *supposed* to pull fuel from a pickup tube without any problems. At this point the only problem I was worried about was fuel sloshing and the pickup point to make sure I keep in fuel when launching wheels up (maybe?) LOL
Low and behold there is a "bucket" inside the stock fuel tank with a "labrynth" or maze that keeps the fuel level the same around the pickup under hard cornering or acceleration. So that made my mind up.
I bought a -10 pickup tube from Jazz:
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/DSC02041.jpg
Drilled the correct size hole after cleaning and etch priming some rust:
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/DSC02040.jpg
Installed:
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/DSC02042.jpg
Had to trim the hose length to get it where I wanted it inside the "bucket" - kinda hard to see but you get the point. There is a indentation inside the bucket that will keep the pickup hose from wandering, and it is tight to the bulkhead fitting, so the hose should never move from that point.

Thanks for the info guys!!!
The trans crossmember I made out of some scrap I had laying around - it's only 14 ga. tubing. I honestly think it would be fine, but after researching I think I'm going to re-do it with at least .125" wall and gussett the piss out of it - the consequenses of it giving up would really, REALLY suck!!!
I found an adapter fitting from Speedway that will solve my brake line size problems, and I have a BUTT-LOAD of other parts that should be in today/tomorrow where I can actually start fabbing up the exhaust and hang the turbo!!!
Pics will surely follow :D

12-31-2010, 08:03 PM
Alright first of all the charger for our Digi-cam is missing...gone...forever lost...So I am using my Blackberry to take these pics...I've got the image size knocked down so the resolution is kinda crappy...Anyway...
Got up this morning and pulled the motor back out to finalize and fully weld the motor mounts...These are the "Carshop" solid mounts, my brother was gonna use RickRacer's templates to make the frame plates at his work, but his boss quit and it kinda queered that all up. I figured I would use these and the trusty JTR/Advance mounts for the motor side so that if need be I can still adjust the position of the engine after all is welded in place.
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/IMG-20101231-00028.jpg
THEN, after I got those welded up, I got the brake lines (manually :laughoutloud:) bent and hooked up to the master cylinder - you can see the adapter I got from Speedway under the driver's area along the frame
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/IMG-20101231-00027-1.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/IMG-20101231-00026-1.jpg
THEN...After I got the brakes done I started on the fuel system
Here is the feed side all laid out -10 line (garden hose size) to huge honkin' fuel filter - on up to the fuel pump located on the engine; then -8 feed up to the regulator. Regulator will have a -8 running into each carb bowl
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/IMG-20101231-00030.jpg
This is the return or bleed side depending on what you want to call it; -4 line from the bleed fitting on the regulator, all the way back to the fuel tank, with an adapter to switch back over to 3/8" rubber hose to the factory fitting in the sending unit. The -3 stainless line goes to the carb hat for boost reference - I plan on mounting the regulator right up on the intake beside the carb.
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/IMG-20101231-00031.jpg
So after I laid everything out I got out my new Christmas present and hogged out where the stock fuel lines run in the frame:
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/IMG-20101231-00029-1.jpg
Then installed the lines - I think it's a good place to run them as they are protected from the engine/transmission in case of a catastrophic failure...the lines actually run inside the spring pocket, but after some investigation, there is a "ear" or a "guide" that keeps the lines away from the spring. I tried to take a picture of it, dont' know if you can see it too well or not...
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/IMG-20101231-00033.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/IMG-20101231-00037.jpg
Anyway, got those partially ran, and then started working on the fuel tank - went ahead and bought a new sender, and got everything lined up. I welded shut the stock feed line, and put a line to extend onto the stock "vent" to the charcoal canister - I'm going to get a little fuel filter or something to use as a vent or breather - will probalby try to find a vented fuel cap to to aid in breathing as well...Maybe from an early carbed truck or a universal cap??? Also added new "anti-squeak" strips from LMC just for the hell of it.
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg132/jameskirk1/Jimmy/IMG-20101231-00038-1.jpg
ALMOST got the fuel tank installed, and then the old lady started in on me :hat: :fighting15:

i dont think you want to go with the -8 into your fuel reg and 2 -8's out to your carb.you may have issues with it.it would be ok if you knew it would never try and feed both bowels at
the same time.-6 to the carb is all you need.guess what i'am trying to say is if you run the -8
lines to your carb and your carb starts flooding fuel over don't blame your needles and seats
as most likely your -8 feed lines are the problem.just trying to help.Alan
jameskirk1
01-01-2011, 10:26 AM
Hmmmmm....I'll keep that in mind - never thought about or heard that was a possible issue?
Lots of blowthrough and N/A alcohol cars wtih -8 lines to the carb...Have you had different experience???
Thanks!
alan johnson
01-01-2011, 10:54 AM
the problem can occure due to your having 2 -8 lines being fed by one -8 line.you can air lock your needles and seat's.it also happens more often when a person is running excessive
fuel pressure, like say more than 8 psi.it's hard to fill 2 -8 lines when your feeding them with a single -8 . also just hard seeing you needing -8's going to your carb. i have one guy set up like this. -10 cell to pump.-8 pump to reg and -6 reg to carb and psi set to 5.75psi.this is a small block and runs 4.60's in the 1/8th.Alan

You'll notice that some of the parts are rusty - that's because the guy doing the cage had the truck for OVER FOUR MONTHS!!!! It was a trial by fire, but I really like the way it turned out. :D
To do list:
1) Paint the cage
2) Install the seat where I want it
3) Install motor and weld up hotside/mount turbo
4) Take truck back to cage guy to do the front bars that tie into the engine compartment.

Yes sir! I don't think I'll have to cut too awful much either - probably just notch into the dash speaker grills...I hope :)

Got one coat on this morning...this is the Hammertone Black from Rustoleum...Used a small 2" foam cabinet roller and one of the smallest black sponge brushes that they make...Couldn't be happier with the color - I'm sure I missed some spots but will be easy to touch up as it is not a perfectly smooth paint...definately has a lot of build to it...

Does the rustoleum hammertone paint cover very well? Guy thats doing my cage also mentioned this paint to me. Its what he uses on all his race cars. Blazer looks bad ass!
jameskirk1
07-16-2011, 10:44 PM
Yeah it covers awesome - it's almost more like a coating than a paint...when you roll it on little strings/webs come flying off the roller if you go to fast lol

Right through the speaker holes - I'll trim the corner of the speaker grills and I think it'll look awesome!!!
This morning before it got too hot I went out and touched up all the little places I missed on the initial paint job on the cage.
If you guys remember I was going to use the ebay turbo headers and planned to add a u-joint to the steering shaft so it would pass through the headers. After alot of thought and seeing Everetts truck wrecked I'm going to go ahead and build a header on the driver's side where I can retain the factory steering shaft. I plan on a fair amount of street driving and would hate for the steering to get into a bind or something stupid happen when going down the road. There are walls at the track but I couldn't live with myself if I crashed into someone else on the street!!! I would hate to think I would jeopardize my safety for a $100.00 worth of flanges and tubing!!!
