FULL SPOOL ? dont go any lowwer the 4.10's .The pinion gear gets weaker ( less tooth contact). If I had one I might hit & 6.50's wiyh it . It depends on how HARD it leaves. with a BRAKE it might not see 6.80's .

Trust me, i thought about your route first. It's cheaper and stronger to cut down an 8.8. I got a 3:73 posi loc unit from a mercury mountaineer, best desicion I've made yet. It cost me just under 400 bucks to do the swap and that included the new ujoint and wheels, custom ubolts, brake lines, and brake hardware. You won't buy a decent posi unit for the 7.5 for less than 400 bucks that will outlast or be stronger than the 8.8.

I agree. The money you will spend to get a 7.5 "strong" you can do a STOCK 8.8 with a good gear ratio right from the get go that will have 31 spline axles and be stronger.
I cut 1.5 60ft times on a STOCK untouched 8.8 in a 3980 lb pig on drag radials. I know that I personally wouldn't trust a 7.5 to take it like the 8.8

ok ill probly do the 8.8 then what about brakes ? do they come stock with disk brakes if so what do they come out of and axels if u half to cut them down who does the axels ?

Look for one out of an Explorer it should have 31 spline axles and disk brakes. They can be had with 4.10 gears and a posi. The most cost effective way to narrow an 8.8 is cut the long side down to the same length as the short side and run 2 stock short axles.

I've had welded 7.5's fail catastrophically on the street. Parts all over the road.

If you want to go narrower than a "one-side-shortened" Exploder axle, (about 56.75" WMS to WMS), then switch to 9" big bearing housing ends and 9" 31 spline axles. I used Exploder brakes on the 9" in my Vega, so I know the Exploder discs will work with 9" housing ends, you just need a bearing spacer to hold the bearing in there all the way. :cool4:

Pulled mine off a 2001 Exploder. 4.10 gears Payed $100 over year ago. Just keep looking, and you'll find one. IMO find a late model, better chance for less wear.

This all the info I needed to cut down and 8.8

And I think all explorers from the late 90's on have disc brake's
And the cost of the rear end and short axle was under 180.00 at pull a part with disc brakes and was a 3.73 posi!

Mine went in my driveway. I was practicing launch and 60 ft times. When the axel went. I thought the my blazer was gonna do the hardest 360. Like launching with one wheel drive. Lol. I didn't realize what happened untill my brake pedal went to the floor... It didn't stop like I should. Looked in my side view mirror and seen my one wheel and tire was sticking out about 8 inches further then what it should. Luckily it was in my drive way when it happened cause I went into the lawn a little when the back end tried to swing around on me. If I would have been at the track I would have bit the wall a little.

I believe everything you ever wanted to know about the 8.8 swap is detailed very good in the tech section under drivetrain. A few have written a threads on the swap with pictures, but you'll have to search for it. But there must be a dozen articles and threads on this subject.
Sorry if it sounds like i'm being an ass but it gets exhausting repeating everything once a month.

Running 8.8 got out of a 92 exploder. Been shortened and axle ends changed to ford mustang end with 9 inch axle bearing with proper back space so 90% all mustang after market brakes fit. 7.5 went the way of the dodo bird half way through the first season. Sounded like a 12 gauge at launch.

i had a 7.5 built up 1. Mosier axles $250
2. motive spool $90
3. 4.10 richmand gear $200
Thats what i had in mine, + new breaks , bearings, wheel cylinders.
Now add 1. diff cover $150
2. c-clip eliminators $150
total $810
When its all said and done, and you build it as strong as possible it's not that strong and its still just a 7.5.
The 8.8 or 9" is the only option. spend it once, and spend it right.
