Yeah, too bad. I guess I'll be running a harder tire that won't hook as hard. My 7.5 cost $700 (disc brake rear, 4.10 Richmond gear and Eaton clutch style LSD). Someone posted that a Ford Ranger rear (8 inch) is a bolt in with a coversion u joint from NAPA or a drive shaft shop. F%$@n cheap GM and their cardboard and paper rear ends. :evil2:
I was joking when I said "spare parts". :laugh4:

That was me. And it was an explorer 8.8. The rangers dont bolt in and they are 28 spline anyway. And don't have locking differentials.

I'll have to go to the local u pull yards this weekend and look around. I don't know how Ford identifies their rear ends for gear ratios and locking rears, S10s are easy. Guess I'll have to pull covers. :evil2:

Damn, it's F***ing hot here. I found 4 disc brake Ford Exploder 8.8 rears at the U Pull yard, I didn't check for lockers but they are cheap. A complete disc rear for around $125. Doesn't matter if it's a posi - same price - I love it. I guess I'll have to bag a few. I did notice one thing, the Ford rear has a flange style pinion connection to the drive shaft which should not be a problem, take the flange from the drive shaft and get the conversion U Joint and it will work. I don't have a big power motor, although I have an '82 383 short box that has pretty good bag, but I haven't run slicks or anything that will break stuff. I spent $600 on a disc Blazer7.5 late model rear for my '91 shortbox 3.4 five speed weezer V6, I wish I had known about this Exploder rear before I spent that $$$. :sick2: Yeah, next mistake. I guess I don't need a beefer 8.8 with my drivetrain, but seeing a hefty rear underneath your truck is cool. :smile5: Eh, it's only time and money. WTF, it's an S10- you know, not the H1N1 virus, just a slight S10 disease - no fever, just a rush.

Ford has a buck tag on the differencial that is stamped 3L73 or 4L10. these will be limited slip 3.73 and 4.10- rears. if the L is missing (3 73, 4 10) then its an open carrier. Most likely with the disk brakes you will have limited slip.
If the tag is missing check the gearing the old fashion way with rotating the driveshaft and counting revolutions for a complete rotation of the tire.
Definately get the flange from the driveshaft too.

You will find this tag on an 8.8. This tag is a 3.73 locking 8.8. The "L" means locking. The "8 8" stand for 8.8. And the "373" is the gear. So if you were to find one with 4.10's and a posi it would read "4L10 8 8". If its an open diff then there would be no "L". 01XtremeLT1 had it right.
