found a 8.8 rear for sale that is cut down for a s10. it is narrowed 1" on each side. will this rearend work in place of a stock rearend or would wheel tubs need to be modified? with the rearend being shortend 1" on each side. would a 15x10" rim fit? if so what back space would be needed
8.8 with 3.5 tubes welded ( narrowed 1 inch on each side)

It was in an 01 blazer with a 15x8 wheel with a 275. Built to run a 15x10 And clear frame. its an explorer rearend so i'm guessing on a 1st gen s10 it will be a half ince wider on each side

why would they cut it down 1'' on each side when its an offset rearend?
that would mean its now narrower, but still crooked in the chassis.
Unless you mean a mustang 8.8 and not a 31 spline disc brake 8.8 from an explorer.

Mines from a explorer. CAn't remember how much was cut, but mines now centered. It was like 2.5 on one side and a inch on the other. Still a 1 inch longer then stock on both sides. But I can now flip axles from side to side and no crocked drive angle.

I'd ask for a measurement from WMS to WMS, and whether the pinion is centered or not, (or if the axles are the same length). :cool4:

Actually I was wrong one axle is longer. But the center section is centered. I can see about getting measurements the next time I'm at the shop

Appreciate the info fella's. i asked him bout the pinion being centered and what the measurments were. his response was this "The pinion was centered off the driveline. I'll get the measurements tomorrow" i think a bolt in 9" is looking better and better

I cut 5" on the long side and 3" on the short side.
Its damn close to being centered in the truck and 1" narrower than stock on each side. The axles are within a 1/2" length of each other.
Good Luck!

A stock s10 rear end is 54" from axle flange to axle flange. Where the wheels bolt to the axles. If you cut the rear down to those specks then when ordering your axles you will need them the same length as stock. I think they are 26 3/4. As far as the backing space goes. If its a 94 and up s10 the bodies are1.5 inches wider per side then the gen 1. A wider wheel will tuck the fenders eisier on the 2nd gen trucks. 15x10 with 5.5 bs will tuck on a stock width gen 2 truck and looks sweet. As far as the 8.8 with 9 inch ends, they are the shit. Super strong and parts are plentyfull. A 12 bolt gm rear and a ford 8.8 are the same size,,,,practicly. If you want to save a little more money. Then take an 8.8 out of an explorer, and cut the long side down the same as the short side and use 2 of the short side axles. I have already been through all of these issues. I hope this helps in any way.
