Hi there, I'm in the process of putting a small block chevy in and s10 that had been modified to accept a 440 chrysler engine! :laughoutloud: Anyway, I'll be lazy about this and post a link to the thread I started on it on S10Dragracer (If that's ok)

http://www.s10dragracer.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=841

The engine will wind up about 6" back from where you would normally have a small block in an S10 :)

The link back is absolutely fine but.. I did install a script that work with your browser
that lets you copy and paste anything..

Check this out.. (time frame..about 30 sec..)

"I got started on my S10 this weekend. Brought it in the shop, raised in on the hoist, then put 2 jack stands under the rear suspension and let the truck down until the chassis was level http://www.s10dragracer.com/phpBB3/images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif

I then made a few straps that was used to hold a 10 foot length of exhaust tubing in place of the crankshaft on my dummy block. This gives me a straight line to the yoke on the diff. I strapped the tube to the block and moved everything in place. I needed to see how far back I could put the engine since the firewall has already been moved back. So I nudged it back but leaving enough room to get to tranny bolts and maybe even have room for the distributor lol. I also had a height reference for the crankshaft center line when the 440 mopar was in it. I hoisted the the engine until the measurement was bang on.

Anyway, once I had the engine where I wanted it, it had a 2 degree angle http://www.s10dragracer.com/phpBB3/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

So now came time to measure across the front of the engine to inside the frame rails so I have a measurement to trim my motor plate with. 23" is what I came up with minus 1/4" on each side leaves me with 22-1/2". I trimmed the plate and also put angles in it and trimmed the top of it too.

I made mounting tabs out of 1-1/2"X3/16" steel flat stock, cut them to 5" long. Made sure my engine was centered and vise gripped the the tab on the passenger side to tack it in place. That part didn't go very well cuz the welder I was using sucks. I did manage to get a couple of "solid" tacks and drilled the holes.

Right now, I'm thinking since the welder is crap, I'm going to get 1-1/2"X3/16" angle iron instead, drill the mounting holes and bolt it to the frame... After that, I can take it to my work one night and weld it in place.

I wish I had taken pics... But I was a bit frustrated with the welder.

To give you an idea about how far back the engine will be... if you measure from the front of the cross member on the passenger side, the mounting tab for the engine is 1-3/16" http://www.s10dragracer.com/phpBB3/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif

It looks like I will have to remove the intermediate steering shaft to weld the driver's side tab. Plus, I will need to get rid of the plastic cover that goes down over the joint at the steering box.

So, there you have it for now... Once I get the front motor plate secured, I was going to to the tranny cross member... But with the welder, I'll do the rear motor plate first and take it to my work to weld all the tabs at once."

"Monday I made the angle brackets and drilled them and attached them to the plate. I found out that I had to trim the plate just a bit on the passenger side so that it can sit correctly on the angle bracket.

Tuesday I started thinking... I would be nice (since I have the use of a hoist) to mock up the mid plate with the truck up in the air! But the problem with that is the differential yoke reference would not be correct since it's not sitting at ride height. Then it hit me! After work, I drove out to my truck, crawled under it and measured the distance (center to center) of the rear coil over mounting points at ride height. Then today, I went and bought a 3' length of 1"x1"x1/8" square tubing, cut it in half, drilled a hole at each end measuring 15" center to center and will be bolting those in place of the rear shocks! So then, I'll be able to have the diff at ride height even though it's 6 feet off the ground! http://www.s10dragracer.com/phpBB3/images/smilies/icon_mrgreen.gif"

"I was looking underneath... I may have to lower the engine a bit. Top of the tranny might hit the floor, plus, if I have a 4" drive shaft, it might rub the top of the drive shaft loop! So right now I've asked a buddy if he might have an old oil pan sitting around so I can see how low I can go."

"Ok, I think I messed up but it's not too late. I had my engine and tranny combination pointing directly to the pinion. That would give me a 0 degree front u-joint angle and I didn't measure at the rear yet but I know the pinion is pointing down. I've read that you need 1 or 2 degrees so the u-joints and needle bearing work and don't seize up. So now I'll be lowering the front of the engine and leveling it out... that should give me the angle I need".

Ahh the majic of Java script!!

Cool!! Thanks!! :)

I went to go work on it today but there is an audi with missing engine parts that is in the way of me getting the engine block to continue my mock up. Plus, this is kind of a 2 bay garage, on one side there are 2 hoists inline with each other. I use the hoist closest to the door cuz it puts the truck nice and level from side to side. I pushed the truck in on the other side where there is just one hoist, brought it up on the hoist at it was leaning by about 3 inches. Not good, I put the truck back on the ground and pushed it back outside. I guess I'll take a weekend off :)

I now have a bare block, cylinder heads and empty transmission case installed in the truck. I have a problem however... The front suspension has not moved at all! I stood on the front frame rails and it just moved down about 1/4". I weigh about 255 lbs and even though there is no front body work on the truck at the moment... I don't think it'll be enough to get the suspension to move. I'll have to get the front end weighed and get coil springs accordingly.

Yep.. the correct coils and shocks will fix all ;)

I just uploaded some pics of the block sitting in place and I also put a cylinder head on to see if my steering shaft was going to be in the way... WOOT!! IT'S NOT IN THE WAY!!

I just seen the post everything looks like it is coming alone smoothly. If the had a big chrysler in there I bet the springs are hefty

There won't be much progress until spring now... It's going in storage in November. I was hoping to have more done by now, like the cross member for the transmission. I had all my parts rough cut for it yesterday, was ready to tack weld one of the frame brackets on and couldn't find the mig welder! It's not my garage, it's a commercial garage and only get to work on my truck on the weekends. The mig welder wasn't very good so I'm guessing he threw it out.

That's a bummer, if I were closer, I'd bring mine over and you could use it... The truck is coming along nicely. I told my brother about your truck, he's a mopar nut... and he asked why I wasn't putting a 440 in mine... I told him that I would if he gave me his 440 that's in his barracuda... he laughed...

Can't wait to see your truck run! I bet it will haul a$$ :10:

I was reading up a little about running without an alternator (which is what I have been doing for a long time). I don't know which way I could mount an alternator on it. My idea at the moment is to mount it backwards. Another idea is to do the roundy-round drive shaft driven alternator.

Mine is backwards. Works good.

Oh, btw... I might be able to get some work done this winter after all! I was going to store it but the people I'm moving in with will let me use the garage :)

I am doing a similiar build but was not lucky enough to find a roller that had the firewall work already done. Looks like you doing a Great Job! I love big motors in the S10, but don't like the small engine compartments, so I had to "modify" mine too. Keep us up to date, can't wait to see it finished.
