Ok for those of you know I have a family that wants to race so I have been building them a dime racer. Some of you on this site may have seen some of the pics on another s10 site last year, but here are pics from the start for those who haven't seen them.
To start the story I bought this s10 for $100 as a roller.

Within a day I started to tear it down to bare frame

ok you guys here is a little info about the chevy in the back ground. I got it from my boss in trade for doing a motor swap (350out/ 396 in) in a 72 4wd short box w/ 6in lift. Not a bad trade was it. anyway the chevy is a '49' 5 window it will be the next project after the wifes racer. the body comes off the original frame and is getting set on! ready? a 1990 2wd dodge 3/4 ton frame with a Cummins power plant! when done it will be my summer toy hauler for shot distances and summer driver.

did you put anything else under the cab when you were sanding on it from the underside, or just the 4 rachet straps?

just the 1.5 inch ratchet straps. they work good.
at this time the truck is on hold till I get the blazer done this next week, and get it on the dyno for tuning.
But I have been working on the box and got the cage last week, just havent welded it in yet.

I finally got in the shop this weekend and got some work done. I got the cage mocked up and the hoops and rear down bars welded together but ran out of welding gas before I got it completely done so I will finish it up today. but here are a couple of pics.

How did you finish the welds on the rear bars that connect to the hoop?
thumpn
12-20-2011, 12:44 AM
I mocked up the main hoop with the roof hoop w/ duct tape and bailing wire but didn't weld them to the floor, then welded those into place on the bottom of the joints. Then I welded the rear bars onto the main hoop across the bottom of the joints. I then removed all the bailing wire and duck tape and tilted the whole thing forward so the bottom of the rear bars were up in the air. from there it gave me plenty of clearance to weld the top of the joints. I then tilted the main hoop back into place and welded the rear bars to the frame over the axle. after those were in place I welded the a pillar tubes to the front of the roof hoop, with the windshield out I can get to the top of those joints. I then welded the bottoms of the hoop and A pillar tubes to the 6x6 plates. then added tube gusset's from the bars to the frame.

I thought you couldnt weld the cage to the tin in a framed vehicle per the rules, only in a unibody?

this cage isn't for cert just to go to the 10's, all 4 corners are welded to the body mounts on the under side as well

Thanks again!

My cage is a 4 point at this time, I have to run the bars from the hoop to the bed and put door bars. Mine just go to the body as well but I will tie them to the frame. Right now I just want 10's tomorrow I will want 9's :D.
Nice build, I like how your are doing everything.

I did a little looking last night and seen ls1 ls2 ls7 then i got lost LOL its a new world for me are they all the same block just different heads. Still up in the air for motor but its going to be a small tire truck. Just something to play with and do some a&d on some parts we are looking at making.

They are all unique yet similar. Depending on your goal and how much you want to spend as to which is best for you. I have been messing with them since 1999 if you have any questions I'll be glad to help.
I have not fooled with the l92 style heads or ls7 stuff but I do know that those take a whole different cam profile then the cathedral ports.
