View Full Version : Something different
I know this wont make it go faster, just the opposite if anything. When I got my truck, (the gold one in the pic, it had one of those flat pop-up sunroofs and it buckled the crap out of the roof.If you've ever changed the roof skin on an S-10, you know they're pretty ignorant. So I figured I'd do something different.

The black RX7 next to my truck is what we hacked the roof off and fusion welded it on the S-10.

Thank you guys. Pa. roads suck balls, so, not a good idea to have anything hanging from a street driven truck. Anybody ever do anything like this? They work great and don't get caught in potholes!

If mine was a street truck I'd love it. I wish I had your bodywork skills. I just find that I don't have the patience to do it. Years ago I spent literally 3 weeks in my spare time making the sheet metal perfect for paint on a Harley I owned. And the sheet metal was all new parts! Took me another 2 weeks after painting it to wet sand and polish it out. I can't imagine how long it would take on a car or truck.
I may experiment next winter on the S-10?

Hey, Jeff, those new Harley parts leave alot to be desired, don't they? They look good till you run your hand over them, then you want to puke.
I'm getting too old to be patient. It's no wonder when I get home from work I'm so wierded out, I don't dare talk to anyone for a while for fear I'll say something I'll regret. Yeah, no doubt bodywork will try your patience. I have no choice. It's all I know. They won't let me do brain surgery anymore.
You're S-10 looks pretty straight and clean. I think after seeing the way you do things, you'll have no trouble at all. I've watched your build for a long time and the work you've done is excelent and nothing more could be expected from the effort. I think after all that, bodywork on it would be a piece of cake.

Thanks for the kind words.
Those new Harley parts were not what I was expecting. Flat areas that weren't flat were the norm. It was also my first two tone paint job. I painted it purple and white. The next year Harley offered almost the exact same color package on their FL line. Bummed me out for awhile. I liked having something different.
The truck is pretty clean, but has a couple of bubbles in the paint about 7-8 inches above the right cab corner. And sometime over the last couple of weeks someone at the shop put a small ding/dent in the lower area of the drivers door. I'd be really pissed if it had nice paint! As it is, I'm not overly concerned about it. I will probably attempt body work and paint after this season. Spent so much time, effort, and money on mechanical items the last year I guess it's time to make it look purty.
I may have questions for you when the time arrives.

JeffI'll be more than happy to help in any way I can. I did mine backwards. Got it looking decent, then kept blowing junk up. Gotta be too careful that way rippin it apart, and especially puttin it back together.

I hear ya. I hate having to worry about leaning on the paint, or scratching something. That is part of the reason I haven't made the paint a priority at this point.
It gathers alot of attention at the track the way it is. I just want it to make me happy when I see it. I think the hardest part for me is going to be picking the color or colors.

I do love the white with black hood and window look. I guess I just thought if I'm gonna go to all the work to prep and paint that it might show better in a brighter color?
I don't know at this point. I guess I have all summer to think about it.

JeffIf you want a bright color, we just had a couple Lambo's we had to touch up, both really impressive colors. I believe the pearl orange one was an 07, and the pearl yellow was an 05. Might want to look into those. They had my wheels turning for my truck. The down side is, they were both tri-coats. Base, mid-coat, clear. I real pain in the ass to spot in.

Those tri-coats are a pain. I love spraying non metallics.
Don't have to worry about tiger stripes or blotching. Not to mention that it is a breeze to wet sand.
Maybe white and black is the way to go... white hides soooo many imperfections, except panel gaps!

I'm very interested in trying a setup like this if the caltracs don't work that great on the new Jimmy...Have you tried it on the track?

Thats a sweet looking set up for sure..
When I went into designing mine I was pulled all different directions..
As you have seen.. I went the complex method..
The next will be much more simplified.

I'm very interested in trying a setup like this if the caltracs don't work that great on the new Jimmy...Have you tried it on the track? Im sure the Cal Tracs will work! Yes it works great at the track.Doesn't spin a tire.Pics the left front wheel up (barely)Doesn't bind, wrap up or wheel hop, and they're adjustable. The problem I had was it squatted like a pig from taking leafs out.Right bedside behind the tire was gettin real close to the ground. Frame isn't boxed, so it twisted pretty bad. I just put QA1 adj shocks on, had it out yeaterday and they seem to help. Comes up pretty even now, and doesnt blow the tires off as bad on the street.Best 60 ft last year was 1.60. I'll let you know if it helps or hurts. There seems to be 2 schools of thought; weight transfer and wasted energy, going down instead of foreward...We'll see.

Thanks, Mike. I was pulled all over the place, too. I figured I'd try this first, had 1/8 in plate, bars and rod ends layin around, had nothing to lose. All home made so it didn't cost anything. Yes, you went complex, and it looks amazing! I'm way on the other end of the spectrum, real simple, and I guess I got lucky.

JeffYes, tri coats are a pain, even if you shoot them alot. Just another step that can go wrong. You don't have many imperfections, so there should be no worries. Hell you could paint it black if you wanted.I like it white with the black hood and windows, honestly. Theres a reason it draws a croud.

There's one that brings in over 1300 cars every Friday! Tim,(EastEndRiders) and Andy(grappler) were talking about meeting at that one. Supposed to be the biggest weekly east of the Mississippi.

That would be cool.. The last real cruise I went to was The Woodward Dream Cruise in Michigan..
Man, I miss those Detroit nights..
We would race down the back streets then head back looking for more action..
Everyone knew the rules and everyone knew what to do..
No Bullshit..
Run what you brung.. Then shake hands after it was over..

Now that's a cruise! My buddy goes every year and has been trying to get me to go.He brings pics home of some unbelievable stuff! We had alota "back street" fun years ago, too. They're really gettin serious about it now if you get caught around here. Kid lost his license for 6 mo a few yrs back. Worse penalty than DUI
