well I have been trying to get the truck to hook, I was rechecking the pinion angle and found this..

the pinion angle was at +3 degrees, now I know why. Ok, its saturday nite and was racing sunday morning... I had some 2.5 square tubing, stronger than aluminum right?... I put in the square tubing as lowering blocks, looked ok, pinion angle at -3 degrees, great ready to go racing.. First ( and only ) time run, hooked great,, no spin.. 1st round, waiting..uugghhhh on the break, off the button and BAMM !!!
this happened...

broke the u joint flange where it bolts on to the 8.8 rear end.. got her home and started looking over the damage and found this...

that rear end wanted out of that trunk bad...
anybody ever see spring perches bend like that ??

looks to me that your tubing wasnt wide enough. just my opinion, looks to have been in the center of the perch. there isnt really any string in flat steel, so perch bent. looks like you need some drop springs. search craigslist, i got 3' drop springs, caltracks, nitro drop shocks, all for cheap off craigslist. good luck. it sucks learning that way, trust me i know! lol.

Wow. Nope, never saw that before. Wonder if that block did that to the pirch? If you look at the block, it's spread to the point that the only part of it bearing any weight or torque would be in the middle where the centering pin is. I haven't had any luck with the aluminum blocks. Cracked two of them. Guess I've been lucky. That sucks, vicn8r

Nice job! ;)

The wear marks make me think that rear had been moving around quite a bit..
I am also going to have to agree with Nate based on the picture.. Looks like the
square tubing may not have been wide enough..

Any way you look at it.. Your making some power! :)

I made mine out of .250 4"x4".. Cut it to size with my band saw..
Welded it back together.. Added a cross section in the middle and boxed the ends..
They weigh like 5lbs each.. lol

You can kinda see them here

IMO blocks are a no-no:nono:. ESPECIALLY aluminum, I wouldnt put aluminum blocks behind my 4 banger.

If you're making enough power to do that to them perches, it's time to go with split-mono's and get your drop out of the springs, not a block.

Good luck on breaking mine :stirpot:
Mine are as good as welded to the perch.. But then again.. They are not the normal blocks
and they are getting a little "extra" help.. But it's still "Stock".. lol :laughoutloud:

Sorry.. I'm done. :21:

I would've triangulated them out to make the base that sits on the leaf cover more area honestly. The main problem with blocks is that they concentrate all the force into such a small area of the spring.

And that setup is about as "Stock" as a mustang with a tq arm:smash:

To be honest.. I went out as far as possible without "gapping" the center..
The farther you go out.. You start to loose contact with the center because of
the curvature of the spring.. Unless you made a curved block?.. That would be sweet! haha

I am slightly blind, but in the pic they looked to be fairly even with your perch.

Curved blocks shouldnt be too hard, but wouldnt really be a universal thing as every spring has a little different arch to it. At that point though it may be easier to just get all the drop in the spring. Could also get the desired drop by raising the mounting points as well.

Yeah, good point. And yes, to do that, you're definately making power, and that will always go after the weak link.Mike, your setup looks great. One of the nicest I've seen. Very neat and business-like.
