View Full Version : Could this be a problem?

Had a little mishap at the track the last time we were out. Sounded like a valve tap and power was definitely down.
I pulled the valve covers off and found all rockers were still centered and no visual problems so far. So pulled the intake and found the lifter dogbone on number 1 cylinder rattling around against the pushrods possibly causing the tapping sound. But this is not a good thing to find with roller lifter. So i pulled the lifter and looked down to the cam lobe. oh brother, something was not right. So pulled the cam and this is what we found.
Here is the No 1 exhaust lobe. Exhaust (http://www.s10racer.com/board/picture.php?albumid=179&pictureid=3391)
And here is the intake side. Intake (http://www.s10racer.com/board/picture.php?albumid=179&pictureid=3392)
So with the down time for the new cam to show up I will need to pull the converter and get it upgraded to a multi-disc so it can be locked up and no more blowing threw it. I'll be ordering a new cam Monday.

Sucks to hear that!!! Could always be much worse!!!
What brand of lifters were they? I would DEFINATELY want to check spring pressures and inspect all the other lifters before going back together with her :D

id pull the pan and check the bearings. all that metal running threw a motor cant be good on it.
01XtremeLT1
05-09-2010, 09:02 PM
the lifters are stock hydraulic rollers. they should have been good to use with the springs. the engine was shut down, coasted to the trailer and loaded up. was turned on for a very brief time to hear it to figure out where the tap was at. it originally sounded like #2 but the lobes are #1. all other lifters look good as do the cam lobes.
what happened was when the dogbone lifted off the lifters the lifters rotated and pealed the metal from the cam. The rollers on lifters have the metal welded to the sides of them.

I thought that roller cams escaped the evil lack of oil additives that are needed with flat tappet cams. Guess I was wrong.:sick2:
September?? If I'm not on some hurricane or tornado, I hope I'll be there, I'm going to a 3.8 Grand National V6 in my dime with a 5 speed. Maybe I can actually go a little fast.:hat:

Rollers do not have the problem with the lack of additives as you stated. the problem arose when then #1 dogbone lifted and bent the hold down spider. This allowed the roller to turn 90 degrees and carve its way through the lobe welding the pieces of lobe to the side of the roller.
So my quest for a replacement cam has begun. Also will be taking this time to get the converter removed and shipped back to Precision Industries to be turned into a Multi-disc so it can be locked. Currently, or went it was running down the track, it was blowing through the converter so our times suffered a little. Hopefully when all is said and done we can break into the 8's in the 8th. :)

I think it will be 3 weeks out before its running. it will take a few days to get the converter to PI and they have about a week turn around. that will put it close to next thursday for them to ship it back. so I do not expect the converter to arrive before the following tuesday. :( That puts us right at Memorial Day weekend. :(hen once its put back together she will definately need a tune for the new converter.
But she will be ready by September. :D

Found a few more troubles.
Everett: Thanks for recommending to look at the springs I took a look and found a few inner springs broken. I believe 4 broken on the passenger side and 2 on the driver side head.
Here are the pics.
spring-A (http://s10racer.com/board/picture.php?albumid=284&pictureid=3630)
spring-B (http://s10racer.com/board/picture.php?albumid=284&pictureid=3631)

spring-F (http://s10racer.com/board/picture.php?albumid=284&pictureid=3635)
I will be pulling all the springs off to make sure the others are not about to fail. Luckily there is a possibility that these are under warranty and will be replaced. Hopefully they are just a bad batch of springs and this is not a reoccurring problem.
Everything else looks good so far.

Very nice, can't wait.
Got everything under the hood buttoned down and hood on.
interior insulation installed. should be ordering the new carpet today. This will hold me up with getting the rest of the interior back in.
Will get the driveshaft and rear shocks installed Tuesday after work. Then time to clean up some wiring and drill holes in the floorboard for the blowdown tubes.
I know this rebuild isn't as exciting as most but at this point I'll just be excited once its finished. It's been down since early MAY. I'm getting to the point that the BS that surrounds it isn't worth it and my frustration level is almost to the point of getting rid of it and getting out of the hobby all together.

Had a little trouble with the hydraulic floor jack last night but thanks to lxtasy we were able to get the truck on jackstands so we can get the driveshaft installed and the rear shocks. Lxtasy and my youngest took charge and I got to watch. Do not get me wrong, I would have done the work if I had to. But when the young guys want to it's ok with me. I can be a tool Bitch when needed. :)
Once all the spider webs, with egg sacks, were removed safely from under the truck, the rest of the night went smooth. I forgot to take a pic of how dense the webs were. I do not know what type of spiders but where I live we've killed many black widows, and brown widows in my garage. We've learned to include spider hunting into our job assessments.
Now on to rewiring the Nitrous and bolting up the exhaust. That's my Thursday afternoon/evening and Friday job. We might be ready to get it tuned Saturday if all goes well.

Problem ended up being rod and main bearings. Would have been a waste of money to sink any more into this setup. So we decided to bite the bullet and go LS based and not look back. So far I believe we have more SUCCESSFUL runs incident free out of the ls motor in just the last few weeks than the two years of the LT1.
We are now running the same times we ran with a full HCI LT1 with a little nitrous. The LS is stock block with a small turbo cam installed, stock heads, intake and throttle body along with a little nitrous. So we are going just as fast with less. We will only get faster from here with this setup and be consistent. I'm happy we made the decision to go LS.
