Hey everyone,

I just started my project

It's an 1986 GMC S15 longbed. My Father-in-law purchased it new and then sold it to me in 94. I put just over 150k miles on it and I replaced the 2.8L with a GM performance 3.4L crate motor, put headers on, a Holley TBI, MSD Ignition and rebuilt the tranny with all HD and Corvette parts. The truck was pretty fun to drive around town and still got around 21mpg... Then I decided purchased a new Sonoma in 03 and sold the 86 to my oldest son who drove it for a few years. He then sold it to my youngest son. Unfortunately, he past away in September of 06 at the age of 16 and only drove it a few times...

The truck has been sitting ever since and I finally am getting off of my a$$ to make something of it in his memory... It now has 225k miles on it and is ready for a make-over. We are on a tight budget like most people, especially now... so nothing too fancy for now. I just want to get it to the track and have some fun with it. I have a 327 shortblock that I built 6 years ago for another truck that I sold, so I'm going to start with that and work my way up to the big league when the money permits... I just want a toy and give me something to do that I know my son would have enjoyed doing with me. He was more into off-road racing, but I'm getting too old to be jumping around in the desert... He enjoyed drag racing as most of my family does so, it's time to get my butt back to the track after putting the race helmet on the shelf 20 years ago when the kids started popping out

I just sold the motor and tranny this past weekend and we started stripping the truck down to the cab and frame. I'll post some pictures later.

It's nothing like what most of you have, but someday.... ;)

Check out what I just scored on Craigslist for $400!

9" narrowed to 53" outside to outside with 4:56 Detroit Locker. Big bearing axles and he gave me an extra set of axles that are cut it down to 43" if I choose narrow it some more :D

It came out of a Camaro with 4-link. He also gave me a set of calipers and rotors to convert the rear to disc and gave me a set of Camaro front rotors and 2-piston calipers.

Well I got some wheels and tires off of Craigslist today for $ 400.

Need some buffing to sparkle again, but they are in good shape.

Also picked up a MSD 6AL with a 6000 chip. Used for a few months on a Camaro and looks like new! I paid $ 100.

Well, I traded my Suzuki LTZ400 for a fresh 406 SBC :crown:

It's got a scat forged crank, H-beam rods, forged pistons, Dart 230 Eagle Iron heads, Comp Cams roller rockers.

I'm gonna need to tear it down and check everything to put my mind at ease.... He couldn't remember the cam specs and is still looking for the spec card, so I may want to pull it and get the info off of it...

Thanks man :cool4:

Josh was a great kid... It's so unfortunate that a knee injury could take someone's life so unexpectedly. To this day, it's still hard to believe...

For the past few years, I've had little to no motivation to do anything... Once I started planning this project, I've felt much better and now I actually get outside and do something. I want to get this completed so quickly, but I have to pull back and make sure that I'm making the time for other things that need my attention.

Sites like this are really great and I'm glad that I found this and the others that I frequently visit. There are a lot of resources available on the net.

Well, I started notching the front crossmember today. I used the torch to do a rough cut and then used the air cutoff and grinder to finish the cut. Now I just need to double check my clearances and then weld in the plate. :10:

It's raining, but I decided to set the 406 in anyways so that I can verify the clearances.

It looks good, I just had to fold back more of the crown on the firewall and I will need to widen the crossmember notch slightly. I'm beginning to wish that I would have just used front and mid plates instead of the Trans-Dapt plates....

Finally, Finally and Finally.... I got to work on the truck this evening... well kinda...

I set the rear in to see how much I need to narrow the frame to get my 10.5's under the bed... the current setup is 68" outside to outside of the tires.... I'm thinking that I need to get down to 63" max width..

Can anyone confirm that for me? Stupid me did not measure before I pulled the bed and it's buried right now... If someone knows what the max width is, I would greatly appreciate the input :10:

Here are a few pics of it sitting together.

Hey Mike,

Actually, I'm gonna narrow the back with 2x3 tubing that I got for free and use the factory frame rails as my jig... Kinda like the one that S&W makes for the S10. I won't be able to bend the rails, but I can cut the angles and plate them for strength. I'm gonna line the rails up with the 4-link brackets on the 9" which will narrow the rails about 3" on each side. That's my thought anyways... :cool4:

I can't believe that I forgot to measure the max width before I pulled it apart... I even had it written down on my "to-do list" :yikes: your help would be greatly appreciated...

Thanks guys,

I just going to use Eastwood's extreme chassis black. I got 2 quarts off a friend that didn't need them.

I'm gonna two-tone the truck with tunnel-ram grey bottom half and Chop-top silver top half, so I figure a black chassis and cage would look good.

Tunnel-ram Grey (http://www.eastwood.com/paints/automotive-refinishing/ew-tunnel-ram-gray-plus-qt-activator-kit.html)

Chop-top silver (http://www.eastwood.com/paints/automotive-refinishing/ew-chop-top-silver-plus-qt-activator-kit.html)

I forgot that I also made a quick engine cradle out of some scrape 1" and casters that I had lying around. No out of pocket money, just time, electricity and welding wire/gas :10:

Of coarse, I could buy one for about $40, but I can say that I made this one... :cool4:

I took the pic with my phone, my Canon camera took a crap on me...

Thank Mike/Avery,

It's finally coming along :) I think I'm gonna get some more satin black paint locally and paint the front suspension parts after work during the week. That way I can get the front put together next weekend like planned... I just want to find the parts to rebuild the gear box before I paint and install it. I also need to find another 9" housing to narrow and save the 4-link housing for later in life...

truck is lookin grate nice work ..... what motor mounts are u useing are they bough or built ???? i would like to go with the same set up

Thank man :10:

I'm using the Trans-dapt S-10 V-8 mount adapters # TRD-4689 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/TRD-4689/

And then solid 2-piece mounts that I got on E-bay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Solid-Engine-Motor-Mount-Pad-Kit-Small-Block-Chevy_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem27ac0100bfQQitemZ 170389471423QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAc cessories#ht_1664wt_923

There might be better options out there, this is what I ended up with. I might go with motor plates later in life :10:

I hope this helps.

For those of use that cannot afford a plasma cutter, here's a tip for using a torch and getting straight/clean cuts :cool4:

I use a piece of square tubing as a straight edge to get my cuts straight. Just be sure to compensate for the torch head thickness.

On curved cuts, I use a piece of 1/2" square tubing and bend it to match the curve needed. This works out quit well and cuts down on time needed at the grinder...:rock:

Thanks man :10:

This truck means a lot to me and I like being able to share this build with everyone. It's not going to be a high dollar build, but it will be built right. I have been working on this truck pretty much by myself, but I always feel that I have a second set of hands and I feel so much better when I working on it.

I can't wait to get this put together and painted. It will make me feel so much better. :cool4:

Thanks again fireman

With the bed and cab off.. you need to consider how you are going to mount your cage..

I have some 2x3 that I'm using for the outriggers. I think I'll make a few for the bed too since I moved the rails in. I'll either do that or weld in some nuts to the bed where the frame rails are now. That would be quicker and I wouldn't have more paint touchup on the frame :10:

I tell ya, it's been a while since I worked on the truck... I had to work a few weekend shutdowns, for free...(i hate being on salary...) and had a few other things come up that took my spare weekend time away... sucks...

Hopefully I can work on it this weekend... however, my son's Honda Del Sol, AKA "Del Slow"... is needing attention after sucking in water through the cold air intake and hydro-locking up the engine this past weekend... Probably going to be rebuilding a four banger this weekend... :fighting15:

Well, I need to get back to working on this truck... I have a little motivation that I picked up :10:

My brother works at O'Reilly's Auto Parts and got me some Autometer Ultra Lite Carbon Fiber gauges CHEAP! These are going for $500 at Summit and I paid $250 for all four :rock: They were on clearance from when O'Reilly's took over Checker Auto and he stashed them for me.

I just need to get a volt and tranny temp gauge and I'm set :10:

I just looked over this entire thread again. Everything you've done so far is top notch work. What impressed me the most is the way you narrowed the frame and plated it. Crossmember notch is pretty much perfect. I've seen a lot of hack jobs on those. Keep up the good work.

WOW Tony, I just read through this thread for the first time. Looking at your work, it is as professional as I've seen, and I've seen a lot! Your son has got to be beaming from ear to ear every time he sees you working on this labor of love. I don't even really know you yet, but I'm still proud of you and the work you're doing. You are truly an inspiration to all the rest of us,  :D

WOW, thanks a lot guys :rock:

It has been kinda hard for me to make any progress on this project lately. Been dealing with a lot of issues and have had little to no motivation for awhile. Don't get me wrong, this project will never be tossed aside, I've just had too much on my mind for some time and I think it has gotten the best of me... Every time I think it will turn around, it just keeps coming. Didn't really want to say anything, I know that there are a lot of people struggling with their own problems, but seeing everyone's replays makes me want to get out there, get back to work and get this truck done. :10:

I'm taking a two week vacation for Christmas and I hope to get something done on the truck. I just hope that I have a job when my vacation is over... work has not picked up much and January doesn't look very good...

Thanks again guys, it means a lot to me :rock:

Well I picked up a carb yesterday from O'Reilly's $240 :10: 4150 950 cfm. It's been on the shelf for about 7yrs so I will put new gaskets on it when I'm ready to run it.

I just need to sell some of my other parts that I won't use any time soon to make the wife happy. Money is tight with X-mas and all.... :fighting15:

It's been raining, so I haven't gotten out there and worked on the truck. Should clear up tomorrow and then the grinder will start the sparks a fly'n again

Thanks sevenseven :10: I'd love to do it, just don't think it would pay the bills well... I just wish that I would have stayed with my high school dream of working on cars professionally. Now I would pretty much have to start over.

Thanks for the complements

Hey guys, sorry that I have not posted in awhile. Things have been crazy since the first of the year... Too much going on and no time to deal with it. Kind of wears you down and I loose motivation with what little time I have to myself...

I have not done much of anything on the truck this year. I'm dealing with a flooded daughters room from a broken water pipe in the attic two weeks ago while getting my roof replaced. Our house is a mess with everything from her room scattered throughout the house and shop while the room was gutted and treated for mold. They should be ready to start putting it back together by the end of this week. It pisses me off that the roofing company is dragging their feet on this since they have to pay for it...

I'm hoping to get back to the truck as soon as I get my weekend driver (66 GMC) back on the road. Had a valve spring break and I'm going to rebuild the top end and replace the cam. I'm hoping to get that going this weekend if nothing else comes up...

Don't want to sound negative, but if it were not for bad luck, I don't think I'd have any luck at all...

Thanks for all of your comments  it helps keep the flame going :cool4:

Wow, talk about depressing...

I gotta dust the cob webs off this thread and get it cleaned up for more progress :smile5:

I've been battling a pretty depressing year, but I'm getting things lined up for a great 2012 :cool4: going to stay positive and motivated to get this ride to the track.

First things first, need to get the pile of crap out of my shop so I can work again... It's going to be a busy weekend :yikes:
